Unique Houston Elopement Idea: 1910 Harris County Courthouse Wedding + Downtown Celebration

If you’re planning to get married soon and thinking about eloping, you might be wondering how to make your day feel special and unique while still keeping it simple. As an elopement photographer in Houston, I always tell couples that eloping doesn’t mean your wedding has to feel small or rushed. In fact, it can be one of the most intentional and meaningful ways to celebrate your love.

One beautiful Houston elopement idea is planning an intimate courthouse ceremony and then continuing the celebration somewhere nearby with your closest family and friends. This is exactly what Yesenia and Eric did for their wedding day, and it turned into such a heartfelt and memorable experience.

Their wedding began at the historic 1910 Harris County Courthouse, one of the most beautiful and classic locations in downtown Houston for an intimate ceremony.

Private Vows Before the Ceremony

Yesenia and Eric wanted their day to feel personal and emotional, so they started their wedding by sharing private vows with each other at the top of the courthouse stairs. Before the ceremony began, they took a quiet moment together while their family watched from afar.

As they read their vows, you could see how much love and emotion they shared. Both of them shed a few tears as they expressed their promises to each other. Moments like this are one of the reasons I love photographing elopements so much. There’s something incredibly special about couples creating space to truly focus on their relationship without the pressure of a large wedding timeline.

Their Ceremony With Family

After their private vow exchange, Yesenia and Eric’s family and friends joined them for their ceremony. Even though they chose to elope, having their closest loved ones there made the moment feel incredibly meaningful.

They exchanged rings and shared traditional vows, and you could see the joy and excitement from everyone watching. These small ceremonies often feel so emotional because every person there is truly important to the couple.

One important thing to keep in mind when planning a courthouse elopement at the 1910 Harris County Courthouse is that guest count, timing, and day of the week can affect where the ceremony takes place.

Because Yesenia and Eric had more than ten guests, it was a Saturday, and their ceremony took place in the evening, they had to hold their ceremony outside the courthouse. This actually worked out beautifully because the outdoor setting allowed everyone to comfortably gather and celebrate together.

Family Photos and Couple Portraits After the Ceremony

After the ceremony, we made sure to take time for family photos while everyone was together. This is something I always recommend for elopements that include guests because it allows couples to capture meaningful photos with the people who supported them on their wedding day.

Once the family portraits were done, we spent some time taking romantic couples portraits around the courthouse. Downtown Houston has so many amazing photo spots within walking distance, and the historic courthouse architecture creates timeless and elegant photos.

Continuing the Celebration at a Second Location

When Yesenia and Eric planned their courthouse wedding, they knew they didn’t want the celebration to end right after the ceremony. They wanted to keep celebrating their marriage with their family and friends in a relaxed and fun environment.

So after their portraits, we walked about a block away to Underground Hall. This location is perfect for couples who want to continue their elopement celebration because it has multiple food vendors, open seating areas, and fun games. It creates a laid-back atmosphere where everyone can relax, grab food, and continue celebrating together.

Instead of a traditional reception, Yesenia and Eric kept things casual and fun. Everyone grabbed food from different vendors, spent time talking and laughing, and enjoyed the evening together.
